The Institute of Bone and Joint Research was established in 1999 to provide an Institute devoted to advancing our understanding of the disorders and diseases of the musculoskeletal system, their diagnosis and treatments. Our primary objectives are* to identify the causes of joint destruction in arthritis and to develop surgical and medical treatments which will restore joint structure and function * to understand the pathophysiology of bone, cartilage and tendon failure in musculoskeletal disorders and devise new approaches for their repair and regeneration * to identify the factors (inherited, occupational, hormonal, etc.) which contribute to the morbidity of bone and joint disease in the Australian community Apart from supporting research activities in the above areas, the Institute also disseminates recent advances in our understanding of the musculoskeletal sciences by organising regular public seminars and scientific symposia at which leading specialists present their latest research findings. Our long term goalThe Institute of Bone and Joint Research is currently very active within the Departments of Orthopaedics and Rheumatology of the University's teaching hospitals throughout the Sydney metropolitan area. These departments are united under the banner of Musculoskeletal Sciences for the teaching of the medical program of the Faculty of Medicine Our long term goal is to capitalise on the wealth of experience and knowledge possessed by its scientific and clinical members by establishing research laboratories in the new Research Centre to be built at the Royal North Shore Hospital campus of the University of Sydney. Building work will commence in 2006 and we require financial support to fit out our new research laboratories in this new Research Centre. This will provide an Institute of excellence in musculoskeletal research and post-graduate teaching that will serve the needs of patients with bone and joint diseases in the 21st century. |
